Lipodystrophy is a condition which can result in loss of fat (lipoatrophy) in areas of the face and accumulation of fat (lipohypertrophy) around the neck and upper back. Several procedures can be done to treat these problems.
Facial Areas:
Radiesse and Sculptra (formerly New-Fill) are injectable treatments that are both FDA approved for the treatment of facial lipoatrophy (fat loss). Treatment with Radiesse can require one or more sessions. The results can last a year or more. Treatment with Sculptra requires a series of procedures to restore the sunken appearance and the results can last several years. Both Radiesse and Sculptra have patient access programs that can reduce the cost of the procedures when they are used to restore facial lipoatrophy due to HIV. Nasolabial folds (the folds of the skin between the nose and the corners of the mouth) can also be improved or eliminated with a minor surgical procedure. Implants can be placed through the mouth into the sunken cheek area and are permanent. This procedure gives good results with a natural
appearance but does require a surgical procedure.
The recovery time is generally less than a week.
